Beginning Encaustic Painting - explore an ancient medium in our contemporary world
This three hour workshop is designed for absolute beginners. You will learn the basics; which substrates are best, how to prepare and apply paint to the substrate and the best practices to fuse the paint onto the board. You will also be introduced to the many qualities of the paint including opacity, translucency, and texture. Martha will demonstrate several techniques, provide feedback as you work and take time for the group to share insights about what they are learning.

Encaustic Monotype - create one of a kind prints and collect materials for collage
Monotypes are created by melting wax on a hot plate and then placing the paper onto the hot wax. Once pressure has been applied to the paper, the wax is absorbed, the paper is pulled off the hot plate and you have created a unique print. Encaustic prints can be exciting on their own or incorporated into other artworks. There are no mistakes! During the first class you will learn how to heat the plate for a variety of effects, how to use stencils to build and block images and which papers work best for different effects.

Martha is a welcoming, kind hostess who is knowledgeable and passionate about her subject. I had no prior experience with encaustics and Martha quickly informed me about the basics, then she gave me room to explore on my own. She is a very good teacher who is interested in her student’s enjoyment of the material. I particularly liked how well structured her class is and I appreciated her generosity. I recommend taking this class, especially if you are a beginner in the medium.
